SIRGE Coalition Publishes Recommendations for Electric Vehicle Compliance with FPIC

The Securing Indigenous Peoples’ Rights in the Green Economy (SIRGE) Coalition published recommendations to ensure electric vehicle compliance with Indigenous Peoples’ rights and free, prior and informed consent (FPIC). As electric vehicle production drives demand for transition minerals such as lithium, copper, cobalt, graphite, and nickel, the SIRGE Coalition emphasizes that “FPIC must be operationalized as an ongoing condition throughout the full project and supply chain lifecycle.” The recommendations reflect “the increasing expectations of supply chain due diligence” and include:

  1. Ensure rigorous supply chain due diligence

  2. Ensure early, meaningful and ongoing engagement with Indigenous Peoples

  3. Strengthen transparency, disclosure, and accountability

  4. Build equitable partnerships and shared governance

  5. Invest in training, capacity building, and remedy

IIPWG Participant Survey Results

Survey respondents indicated that education remains a high value of IIPWG and are especially interested in projects related to mainstreaming FPIC, energy transition and green economy impacts, and development projects on Indigenous Peoples’ land. In addition to Indigenous Peoples’ rights, participants are largely activated on issues related to climate change impacts, biodiversity, DEI, fair labor practices, and human rights defenders. We also welcomed input on IIPWG content priorities, webinar topics, investor resources, and more to be incorporated in 2026 programming. For IIPWG resources, see webinars and statements and briefs, and learn more about IIPWG.
